Big G – Maids’ Mascot

Big G

Ever wondered why Maid’s mascot is a penguin called Big G?

Maids mascot is named in honour of the late William ‘Gordon’ Macdonald always known as Gordon.

Gordon was successful rugby player in his youth gaining a Scotland cap in 1969. His shirt and cap hang in the bar. He played for London Scottish and Middlesex.

At Maidenhead he successfully ran age groups and went on to run the Colts for a number of years. During that time he created a top Colts side which contained a number of future international players including James Haskell, Paul Dorian-Jones, Max and Tom Evans and others that had professional careers.

That Colts reached the semi-final of the National Colts Cup in 2002 losing narrowly at Braywick to Bath. The Cup in those days included the professional club academies.

Gordon retired from the Colts in 2006 and then became Maidenhead’s Director of rugby, coaching the 1st team for a number of years.

Gordon was much loved and when he passed in 2012 the First team named the mascot in his honour.

And why is it a penguin? Gordon was the son William Macdonald founder of Macdonald Biscuits who produced the famous penguin biscuit which was always associated with Gordon.
