Maidenhead RFC mend broken ways to find winning formula against Exmouth RFC

The ability to mend what was broken and fight back to produce a cohesive winning performance was the bedrock of Maidenhead's entertaining 45-33 victory over Exmouth, according to Russell Bolton.

The Maids head coach was less than impressed with his side conceding a try in the first minute and going 12-0 down after as many minutes – something which is becoming a bad habit – but being able to adapt to find a way to win eased his concerns. "I'm pretty ecstatic with winning," he said soon after the match on Saturday.

"Exmouth are a strong team and for us to take them apart in a lot of areas was really pleasing. We weren't perfect, but the best bit about the performance was that we adapted to the challenges that were put in front of us. "We are working with the players on them adapting on the pitch to what is happening and I think they did that really well." He added: "I can't explain (the beginning).

"I was getting quite angry inside myself with that first 10 minutes, so I had to go and sit in the dugout and tell myself it's a long game. I don't know why that's happening, but if that happens again, and we get a response like that again, then there's no issue." Maids injury-hit squad featured several new players including former Windsor captain Tom King, David Cole and Lawrence Leonard, plus positional changes for other players, but this was all taken in their stride.

Of the debutants, Bolton said: "King was outstanding, his work rate was incredible and he was always in the right place. He had energy and physicality. "Dave Cole well, we love Ryan Long at No.8 but he's a flanker playing at No.8. So to have a real No.8 there gave us a nice balance alongside Will Macaulay who had another exceptional match." Bolton also praised regulars Ed Keohane and Perry Jansen for their influence on the match and the squad. "Ed and Perry's attitude to the last couple of weeks has been spot on," he said. "They are not in the positions they want to be in regularly, but they are doing a job for the team.

They are the epitome of what we are trying to do as a team." Assessing his pack, Bolton added: "Dare I say we have the best scrummage in the league? I don't know, but at the moment we have dominated everyone who has come our way." Exmouth head coach Jon Hill described his team's performance as the most disappointing of the season. He added: "We started very brightly and it was all us, but then we struggled to control the game, struggled for field position, we tried to force too many things.

"I felt the Maidenhead pack was on top of us, especially at scrum time, which put us under a fair bit of pressure. "They took their opportunities and we didn't."

Player of the Month

August 2017 - Ed Keohane

In a season where the 1st XV have gone up a league, we were relying on current players raising their standards and Ed has been a key performer in our pre-season fixtures.

His ability to be direct in his attacking game and then bring in his creative and kicking skills is something that will be key to us this season.

Ed has also been the leading player in our Indigo Metrics work where players are measured on their soft skills such as courage, self-drive, work ethics, continuous improvement and teamwork as well as having taken on the responsibility of leading individual player development with the backs.

Russ Bolton commented "It is a credit to the team the amount of players who were in contention for this month's award but Ed is a thoroughly deserving winner".
