Bolton claims Exeter Uni players 'had the X-Factor' after Maidenhead RFC's 28-12 defeat

Russell Bolton expects his players to learn lessons from Saturday's 28-12 defeat at Exeter Uni and focus on being aggressive in Saturday's home game against Exmouth. Bolton, set to depart as head coach in the summer, saw Maids came unstuck on Saturday against a very strong Uni side – featuring several BUCS (British University and Colleges Sport) players – who he feels would 'walk this league' if given the chance to play together every week.

He admits they had 'the X-Factor' and that Maids struggled to cope with their patient, controlled play. "We have to accept that if Exeter put that side out every week they'd probably walk this league," said Bolton. "They brought in players who usually play for the BUCS League side.

The coaches told us they'd be doing that until the club is mathematically safe. This is their level 5 side and it's supposed to be a development squad, but they're not doing anything against regulations so we just have to suck it up. "We came up against a strong side who had a couple of X-Factor players and although we were competitive, we were also slightly off our game and that's not good enough."

Maids were served free pizzas and food by Exeter after the final whistle. But it was the only charity shown to them on Saturday. After an even opening they quickly found themselves trailing to a fine try from Exeter's full-back.

Further scores were conceded before Andy Berry dotted the ball down to make it 23-7, Will Runciman adding the extras. Dave Cole went over for the visitors' second try but it was far too late. "I feel that it was fairly even pegging in the early stages," said Bolton. "But they scored a try when we missed a tackle and their 15 – who had outstanding pace – was able to run it in.

"That changed everything. They were then very patient and controlled. We challenged them at times but missed a few opportunities, "But I can't say they didn't deserve their win. They made life very difficult for us." Bolton hopes to learn lessons from the defeat which he can implement against Exmouth at Braywick Park on Saturday.

"Before the game I think I was too focused on them (Exeter Uni), when I should have been thinking more about us and how we could be more aggressive," he said.

"We should have been looking at what we could do. "Maybe that got into the players' heads a bit," Bolton added.
