Maidenhead RFC 24-44 Dings Crusaders RFC

A strong second half fightback from Maidenhead could not prevent the heaviest defeat of their fledgling South West Premier campaign away at Dings Crusaders.

Maids, who won for the first time last week at home to Cleve having opened their season with a narrow loss at Cambourne seven days before, picked up no points from the match against a side who are unbeaten and second in the table.

Maids sent a strong side to Bristol to face their hosts, including Tom Finnie returning to the starting line-up at fullback and pace-man Jaryd Robinson available after injury.

However, the issues of tackling and concentration at restarts again surfaced, especially in a difficult first 40 minutes at Landseer Avenue. Maids took an early lead through the boot of Finnie, but capitulated from the restart to concede a first try.

Two more touchdowns followed for the home team as they stretched their advantage to 20-3 before Maids hit back. Perry Jansen scored in the corner following a grubber kick by Ed Keohane which Finnie converted well for 20-10.

The comeback was short-lived as Dings powered in two more tries to secure a bonus point and a 34-10 half-time lead. Maids were more controlled and organised in the second half and started on the front foot which culminated in No.8 Ryan Long going over from the base of a scrum, something which has been a major weapon for Maids this season.

Finnie converted for 34-17. Finnie then left the field with an injured arm, but Maids further reduced the gap when Jansen – now at No.10 – kicked for Robinson to touch down to make it 34-24. Although areas of Maids' play continued to improve, especially the ball-carrying, areas such as the lineout were below par, making their task to overhauling their hosts tough. in the end Dings managed a penalty and then another try to inflict a 44-24 defeat on Maids.

It was a disappointing result for the visitors, but one from which they will have learned even more about the standards required to win matches at level five.

Player of the Month

August 2017 - Ed Keohane

In a season where the 1st XV have gone up a league, we were relying on current players raising their standards and Ed has been a key performer in our pre-season fixtures.

His ability to be direct in his attacking game and then bring in his creative and kicking skills is something that will be key to us this season.

Ed has also been the leading player in our Indigo Metrics work where players are measured on their soft skills such as courage, self-drive, work ethics, continuous improvement and teamwork as well as having taken on the responsibility of leading individual player development with the backs.

Russ Bolton commented "It is a credit to the team the amount of players who were in contention for this month's award but Ed is a thoroughly deserving winner.
