Maidenhead RFC knocked off top spot after defeat at Banbury RFC

Banbury RFC 20 (17), Maidenhead RFC 17 (0)

A rousing rally and three tries in the final quarter of the match were not enough for Maidenhead who lost narrowly to Banbury and with it top spot to Old Patesians.

The in-form hosts started positively with an early try from Cashel Chilvers which was converted by Ed Phillips, and shortly after the kicker was on target with a 40-yard penalty to make it 10-0. The Bulls underscored their dominance when they made it 17-0 before the break when winger Freddie Cracknell went over and Phillips was on target with his kicking again.

Maids applied pressure towards the end of the half, but the hosts held firm, and then extended their advantage shortly after the restart when Phillips notched his second penalty to make the score 20-0. It was from this low ebb that leaders Maids started to show a cutting edge, beginning with a try from substitute back Mike Burnett. Finnie missed the conversion.

Two minutes later the visitors doubled their tally when centre Rorie Hannigan went over the line. Finnie was off-target with the kick from wide out. Fullback Finnie finally got on the scoreboard with a touchdown and conversion of his own to leave the score 20-17 and Maids with all the momentum.

Banbury, who missed a late penalty attempt, were starting to tire and Maids seemed favourites to score next, but the home side fought hard to maintain their advantage which they did successfully.

The victory for the Bulls extended their unbeaten run to eight matches, keeping them in fourth place in South West 1 East. Maids went into the clash at Bodicote Park top of the table by one point and off the back of a satisfying 29-0 victory over neighbours Windsor last week, but are now in second place, trailing Old Patesians by two points.

Newbury RFC are third and only seven points separate the top three teams. Next Saturday, Maids host Chippenham

David Sawyers

Dave passed away on Christmas Eve.

The Funeral Service will be at St.Luke's at 11.15 on the 24th January, with attendees invited to Fredericks Hotel afterwards. A cremation will follow the service, but this will be for the family only.

Dave was a stalwart lock forward playing at a variety of levels for the Club in the 60s and 70s, and later became a long term valued 'groundsman' preparing the pitches each Saturday ready for all the senior home sides to use.

I am sure that there will still be a lot of people around who will remember Dave well, having played alongside him, and will wish to attend on the 24th.

Player of the month-Mark Childerhouse

Mark Childerhouse Chilli receives this month's player of the month award after recently returning from injury.

A regular first team scrum half, Chilli has shown true commitment and dedication to the club during his recuperation and return from injury. Although not being able to train with the senior squad, he has been a regular at training for rehabilitation and is now working his way back to match fitness in the 2nds and contributing to their development both on and off the pitch.

Chilli embodies our #bleedmagenta philosophy.

MINI MOHAWKS TOUCH RUGBY CAMP – FEB HALF TERM

Touch Rugby Camp returns to Maidenhead RFC from Tue 14 – Thur 16 Feb (9am to 3pm with 8.30am drop-off available on request) for children aged 5-13.

Touch rugby is great for developing handling skills, speed, agility, lines of running, decision-making and fitness!

We try to incorporate as many of these skills as we can into modified and full games so that the children are learning but at the same time are making new friends and, most importantly, having fun!
Touch rugby is huge down under and is often quoted as the reason handling skills are generally high over there.

Have a look at some junior games to get a flavour of what touch rugby is all about:

If you would like a registration form or have any questions, please contact Sammie Phillips: sammie@in2touch.com / 07766 525 938.
