Parrott says Maidenhead RFC must remedy availability issues to compete for promotion

Myke Parrott believes Maidenhead RFC have everything they need to gain promotion, but admits it won't happen unless they can remedy their availability issues.

Having consigned Bournemouth to their first defeat of the season with a near full-strength side, Maids were once again under strength for Saturday's disappointing 15-11 defeat at Derby rivals Bracknell.

They were also beset by ill fortune; with prop forward Mark Darlington withdrawing through illness just 15 minutes before kick-off. It meant Parrott had to start, despite not being fully fit and altered the skipper's thought processes for the game. A disappointing first half display saw Maids come off 15-8 down at interval, while dogged defence, allied to the challenging conditions, meant they were thwarted after the break as well. "The conditions made life very difficult," said Parrott. "We should have got over the try line in the second half, but we didn't work hard enough or play well enough.

"The loss of Mark changed everything. It changed my thought processes as a captain, he allows us to scrummage more effectively and gives us more options from the lineout. It's not unusual to only score three points in a half, the pitch was very sticky, but credit to them, they played better than us and we were left to rue our missed chances." Maids will look to round off 2018 with a win over Camborne at Braywick Park on Saturday.

And while the side have shown they can compete with the best this season, Parrott says it's been a season of frustration so far. "I know these players want to get promoted, but they also want to take holidays during the season," he said. "That's the frustrating thing because we've got everything we need for promotion – the players, the coaches, the infrastructure. We can compete for it but it will never happen until we sort out our availability issues. It's something the club must remedy.

"We've got lads who'll be at every training session and every game, but others who are teachers for example and can't commit. It's fair enough but it's tough when you have to make so many changes.

"At selection we'll be saying 'he's on a stag do, he's going on holiday'. "It's just young men in their 20s I guess. Maybe I'm just getting old and moaning too much." Maids will be without Ed Keohane for much of the remainder of the season after the player successfully underwent an operation for a shoulder injury.

This year we are excited to be welcoming an outstanding England Rugby International, Brian Moore. With 64 England caps and five test appearances for the British & Irish Lions, Brian is one of the world's most capped hookers. On his first tour with the Lions in Australia in 1989, he played in all three tests, and in New Zealand in 1993 he played in the last two tests.

Known world-wide as 'Pitbull', Brian was always an aggressive character and a fierce competitor, and was an inspirational leader of the England pack.

He played for Nottingham and Harlequins when is work as a lawyer, brought him to London. Since then, Brian has remained an outspoken personality with strong view about the modern game. He has been part of the BBC 6 Nations commentary team for the past 5 years and has a regular sports column in the Daily Telegraph. He has published an edgy and hard hitting memoir called "Beware of the Dog".

His talk is sure to be lively, contentious, hilarious and entertaining. Don't miss it! For further information and booking forms please contact John Smith at Chilterns@woodenspoon.org.uk
