Cole inspires Maidenhead RFC's fightback win over Ivybridge RFC

A Cole-powered second half performance earned Maidenhead a 26-20 comeback victory over visitors Ivybridge at Braywick.

Maids' mighty No.8 Dave Cole scored two tries – one in each half – and bulldozed his way to countless ball-carrying yards as they successfully fought back from a 20-7 deficit at half-time.

The victory was Maids' 25th consecutive league victory at home, but was initially one of their least impressive despite taking the lead after two minutes when Cole barged over from close range following lineout ball and then a driving maul.

Will Runciman converted for 7-0, but for the remainder of the half Maids were off the pace, and when they did win some go-forward ball, they regularly turned over possession.

Ivybridge, whose patched up pack worked hard and whose confident backline were creative, then pounced when Maids went down to to 14 for 10 minutes because of a yellow card for scrum-half Mark Childerhouse. Tries from Lewis Paterson and Tom Scoles, to add to two conversions and two penalties from Mitch Pinkus, gave Ivybridge a deserved 13-point lead at the interval.

As wretched and clumsy as Maids were in the first half, they were controlled and measured in the second as they shutout the Devon side who never got close to scoring apart from a missed Pinkus penalty.

Maids began the second period as they had the first, with a Cole try from a driving maul following a lineout, but this time they maintained composure and possession to dominate. Substitute centre Alex French scored his first try for the 1sts shortly after to underline the comeback. Both conversions were slotted over by back row-cum-centre Ryan Long who stepped up to the mark with Runciman having been subbed. A fourth try, again following a drive, was dotted down by skipper Myke Parrott to put Maids 26-20 ahead with a quarter of the contest remaining.

Although no more points came, Maids remained on the front foot and comfortably kept Ivybridge at bay to earn a bonus point victory from a patchy performance. Maids, who are now fourth in South West Premier, do not have a match on Saturday.
