Match report - U13 Bs vs Marlow, 20 November 2016
Result: Marlow 0 - Maidenhead 50
Cold, wet and blustery - (the weather not the welcome from Marlow...) was what greeted us this Sunday at Marlow's ground. This was to be a B team game and the Maidenhead lads were looking forward to the challenge - although it's difficult to tell with 13 year olds!
The game kicked off and a customary slow start from Maidenhead led to Marlow attacking down both wings in the 1st 5 minutes. Some great tackling from Hugh Rickard kept them out and at this point the coaches thought it was going to be a tight game. It wasn't to be, and first blood went to Maidenhead with the team putting a string of passes together and a rangy run from Josh Thorley resulting in a try near the Marlow corner post.
The score proved to be the catalyst the team needed, and our forwards started to dominate. This was particularly evident in the scrum with Maidenhead winning all their own put ins and pushing Marlow off their own on a number of occasions, which gave us some great attacking ball. Josh Thorley was enjoying the space Marlow gave us and scored his second two minutes after his first. The remainder of the first half followed the same pattern, Tyler produced two tries with his now customary hard direct running and the last play of the half resulted in a great solo effort from Lucas Burridge from the base of a ruck.
The coaches were very pleased with the forward dominance in the scrum and the passing had been great to watch despite the cold and wet conditions. The areas targeted for improvement were the standing around at the rucks and the boy's body angles going into the rucks and mauls which could easily be improved on.
It seemed Marlow had had a good pep talk at the break and provided better opposition in the second half, it wasn't enough however and Lucas started the second half as he ended the first - with a try. This was followed by another couple from Josh Thorley before Lucas added his third of the afternoon. The name of the game was to now stop Marlow from getting anything out of the game and every opportunity they had was easily snuffed out by a strong Maidenhead defense.
It has to be said that Marlow became frustrated and started throwing some very marginal passes which either missed the intended target or were picked off. Charlie Milligan deserves a mention for a great interception and run before being hauled down 10 yards from the Marlow line. As a team, the boys were now getting better at the rucks and the final play of the game led to Ollie Pearce running in a try after the ball had been turned over at a ruck.
Well done to the team on an impressive performance and a 50 - 0 win in this local derby. These Match reports no longer mention every one by name in the write up as we have now got to a stage where everyone needs to perform or the team doesn't function correctly. Subs may not start but are as equally as important as the starting 13 as 50 minute games can become quite attritional. So a collective well done to all the boys who had a very good day today.
The team was:
Flynn Bayliss, Max Bird, Lucas Burridge (3 Tries), Josh Crook, George Downey, Alfie Flower, Ethan Johnson, Charlie Milligan, Max Olding, Olli Pearce (1 Try), Harry Pechereau, Hugh Rickard, Tom Rowlands, Tyler Simmonds (2 Tries), Josh Thorley (4 Tries), Luke Thorley, Finlay West.
