There is lots going on at the club and here we hope to keep you up to date with what's coming up and reports on recent events.
National Touch Series - Maidenhead (Round 2)
Maidenhead RFC put on a fantastic touch tournament on Saturday in which the top 28 mixed touch teams in the country competed to be crowned National Champions (see photo gallery). There was some spectacular games of touch played and local team Thames Valley Vikings, based in Reading, won the Bowl Final and the Cup Final was hotly contested by London team Bareback Riders against Wigan Touch with the Northern youngsters eventually winning the day with some superb diving tries. The Carnival themed party continued late into the night starting in the clubhouse with a procession of players (and feathers) all the way into town. There were a few sore heads in the touch community Sunday morning. A big thank you to all of the MRFC players, coaches, committee members and staff for their help in making the event so successful.
Maidenhead RFC announces Head Coach
Captain Myke Parrott welcomes Head Coach Russell Bolton
Maidenhead RFC announces the appointment of former Reading Abbey coach Russell Bolton as their Head Coach for the 2015/16 season. Bolton, an England Rugby Community Coach since 2012, is RFU Level 3 qualified. He is a young, forward-thinking coach who has worked in elite and amateur rugby in England as well as in Italy where he was Director of Rugby at Valtellina Rugby Sondalo. He is also involved at Reading University where he still coaches the Ladies team, and has also previously held a Development post with Wasps Academy.
MRFC Director of Rugby Tony Brooks says, "Firstly, Russell has the rather important matter of getting married this week, so the club wishes him and his fiancee a very happy day. He arrives at Braywick following a very successful last season coaching Reading Abbey to an unbeaten BBO Premier league title. We've been impressed with Russ's coaching philosophy and his desire to create an inclusive playing culture that encourages players to contribute to and manage their general style of play."
Brooks adds, "Russell, a former back, is an ambitious coach who will inevitably bring a fresh approach to a senior coaching team already boasting club stalwart Mark Bates, Brad Pennington, Mike Andrew, and Gareth Andrews-Jones. Former England Sevens international Chris Cracknell will also be involved as technical coaching consultant as and when his other coaching commitments allow."
In addition to one or two other anticipated new recruits, Brooks says, "We're also delighted to have former Henley winger/centre Christoph Bart returning to the club. He started out with Maidenhead and played through the age groups and at Colts level before moving on to Henley. Christoph brings power and pace as well as his experience of playing at National League 1 level, so he'll certainly be a welcome addition to the squad".

As a new addition to the exciting UK 7's circuit, Apache Maidenhead 7s is being run by one of the UK's longest running and most successful 7s teams. Apache Maidenhead 7s has been designed by 7s players to provide an opportunity for 7s teams of all abilities to compete in a tournament that is purely focused on the rugby (but with 'a few' drinks afterwards).
There will be an 8 team ELITE competition, a 16 team MEN'S OPEN competition and an 8 team WOMEN'S competition. There will be prize money and/or a Mizuno 'kit gift' across all events with prize money being paid out on the day. With the excellent facilities on offer at Maidenhead Rugby Club, including a new 3G pitch, access to changing/physiotherapy rooms and a fully licensed bar, as well as great transport links, Apache Maidenhead 7s will present the perfect environment for both an entertaining and high-quality day of 7s and we would be delighted if you would join us!
Further details (including the rules, draw and timings) will be sent out nearer the time of the event. There will be no charge for spectators on the day.
Consider coming down to watch a different aspect of the game, support some cracking teams and have an enjoyable day out We now have Barbados confirming their attendance in the Elite section who did very well in the recent "Commonwealth's".
Cameron Gray in U18 England Counties squad (updated)
Cameron Gray, Maidenhead Colts, has made it into the final squad of 24 of the U18 England Counties squad.
Following his progression through county selection (where he captained Berkshire this year), then South West representation, he attended trials at Loughborough University. With 92 boys from all over England competing for just 24 spots Cameron was thrilled to make it through.
He will next attend 2 training weekends in March, a warm up game against Leicester Tigers Academy and culminating in a week at Hartpury college, at Easter, where they will compete against a French Academy U18 team and an Irish schools and clubs U18 side.
Cameron has been playing rugby at Maidenhead since he was 9 and is grateful to all his coaches who have helped him reach this stage.
Thank you from Molo Simbaz Rugby Club
On behalf of Molo Simbaz Rugby Club, we wish to thank you for your help in getting several sets of kit out to our players. Apart from the obvious advantage of having actual kit to play, the club spirits and camaraderie have increased tenfold due to this donation. This is the biggest effect of your donation-to keep the club alive.
The club was started in 2009 by a few enthusiasts from the Molo area. At the first session, some of the recruited players were curious about what was 'wrong' with that really odd ball. It is amazing how far we have all come so far.
Being a non-funded grassroots club in rural Kenya, life sometimes gets in the way of motivation to come to training regularly and gestures like yours sometimes do the trick beyond what the club management and volunteer coaches can do. Whereas resources of any kind will go a long way to support the club, friendship, encouragement and rugby knowledge tips will go a longer way. We have learnt a lot by looking at your club's website and studying the administrative and coaching structures for the different levels. If you have any general information regarding this kind of thing, please share it with us at the club.
It is my hope that Mr Chris Hoy, our deputy headmaster at Peponi House School, and one of the best rugby folk I've ever met will make it for one training session with the players at some point in 2015. We are very grateful to him for delivering all this kit and for continuing to encourage us, and rugby in Kenya consistently.
